Local History
The Montague Public Libraries are happy to support the local history research and interests of our community and visitors. Patrons are welcome to use the Carnegie Library’s Local History Room during regular library hours.
We STRONGLY recommend that those seeking research assistance, access to rare and/or fragile items, and those seeking to take photos of items in the historic collections make an appointment by calling the Carnegie Library at 413-863-3214 or by filling out the Research Assistance Request form here: https://docs.google.com/forms/
How to find items in the collection:

We encourage patrons to use our free database, Ancestry Library Edition, for additional research. This database can only be accessed in the libraries and is available on the library website here: https://www.ancestrylibrary.com/
How to access the collection:
Patrons wishing to access local history materials must fill out a sign-in sheet noting their name and the materials that they would like to access and must present a Montague Public Libraries card, a driver’s license, or a similar photo ID to staff at the circulation desk. This ID will be secured behind the circulation desk until the patron has completed their research. Library staff will help patrons with access to subject boxes as well as rare and fragile materials kept in locked cabinets.
To prevent misplacement of documents and photographs, patrons may access one subject box at a time. Folders within these boxes must also be accessed one at a time, with a bookmark used to ensure that the file folder is returned to its place. All items must be re-shelved by library staff; you can place items that need reshelving in the tray provided. All photographs must be kept in their photo sleeves or albums.
General Guidelines:
- Local history collection materials must stay in the Local History Room.
- To prevent additional deterioration of our historic materials, we request that all patrons wash their hands with soap and warm water and thoroughly dry them before handling fragile local history materials.
- Pencils will be provided for taking notes. To preserve our collection, please do not use pens.
- No food or drink are allowed in the Local History Room.
- Patrons under the age of 12 are not allowed to use the Local History Room without a parent present.
- Backpacks and large bags are discouraged and may be subject to search.
Making copies:
Because the materials in the local history room are so fragile, we do not allow photocopying. Patrons are encouraged to take photographs of local history collection items using their cell phones, provided they do not use flash. A cell phone holder is available for patrons wishing to photograph materials.
